Marriott is the only U.S.-based lodging company namedBETHESDA, Md., Jan. 23 // -- Every year since 1998, Marriott International, Inc. (NYSE: MAR) has been named to FORTUNE magazine's "100 Best Companies to Work For" list, earning the company a place on the magazine's "all star" list. Marriott's overall ranking was 72 this year, and it was one of only four companies recognized that had more than 100,000 employees.
This year, FORTUNE highlighted the fact that J.W. Marriott Jr., chairman and CEO, visits more than 250 hotels a year and meets with employees, and also that the company's turnover rate of 18 percent was among the lowest in the industry.
As a great place to work, Marriott has engaged its employees in its efforts to "get greener." At Marriott headquarters, more than 3,000 employees have enthusiastically "pitched in," helping the company replace 16 tons of Styrofoam and 5.5 tons of plasticware in its cafeteria with 100 percent biodegradable products made of sugarcane, cornstarch and potato ("SpudWare(TM)").
